Live Online Lecture/Workshop Intensives

September 12 - September 22, 2022

Module 1.png

This fall, the Dimon Institute is offering an intensive series of classes in kinesthetic education taught by Dr. Ted Dimon. Muscles, Bones, and Positions of Mechanical Advantage will be the first two-week module and will meet 2 hours per day, Monday through Thursday, 10:00AM-12:00PM EST (with recordings available for those who cannot attend live). This module will also include optional Developmental Movement, Review, and Discussion classes.

Module 1: Muscles, Bones, and Positions of Mechanical Advantage

When we suffer from tight muscles, our first instinct is to try to correct the problem by stretching or relaxing them. This strategy may provide immediate relief, but it overlooks the question of how our muscles are actually designed to work and why we have interfered with them in the first place. Muscles are in fact part of a bone/muscle/connective tissue framework and are designed to lengthen naturally within this framework, provided we understand how this larger system is designed and how to “direct” muscles so that they are able to function naturally as part of it.

In this module, we will explore key “positions of mechanical advantage” that encourage muscle length, how to employ these positions in a constructive and skillful way, and how to project messages to muscles as a way of bringing about natural length and elasticity in the muscles. We will learn to focus our awareness in such a way that we can bring about the natural working of the muscular system, and learn to maintain this awareness as part of using our musculoskeletal system in a more efficient way in daily activity.
