This fall, the Dimon Institute is offering an intensive series of classes in kinesthetic education taught by Dr. Ted Dimon. The Hand  will be the fifth two-week module and will meet 2 hours per day, Monday through Thursday, 10:00AM-12:00PM EST (with recordings available for those who cannot attend live). This module will also include optional Developmental Movement, Review, and Discussion classes.

Module 5: The Hand

The hand is a remarkable achievement of nature—what Jacob Bronowsky in The Ascent of Man called “the cutting edge of the mind.” With it, we can touch and feel objects, use tools, play musical instruments, and create works of art. Comprised of no fewer than 27 bones, over 30 muscles, and thousands of touch and pain receptors—all mapped out in fine detail on the sensory and motor cortices of the brain—the hand is both an extraordinarily sensitive sensory device and an equally subtle motor tool.

But how does the hand actually work? Perhaps because we have such direct control over our fingers and hand, most of us do not question how we use our fingers or whether we need to learn more about the hand and how it works. How, for instance, do we oppose the thumb to the fingers? Does constant flexion of the fingers interfere with how the hand works, and is this related to how the shoulders work? How do we know if we are using the hand efficiently? In this module, we will look at how we flex the fingers and how to lengthen the fingers. We’ll examine how we oppose the thumb to the fingers and how to grip objects in an efficient way. We’ll also explore the design and topography of the hand, which includes the pads of thumb and little fingers and the wrist bones, and we’ll examine how to use the hands like feet as a way of restoring the freedom and openness of the hand.
